We have been finding out lots of information about why we wear poppies.  We used books, pictures and a video to find out lots of information.  We all felt very sad when we listened to an old soldier on the video talk about what it was like to be a soldier in World War 1.  On 11th of November we all stopped to remember the soldiers that were very brave, now and in the past.  We made lots of poppies, by drawing them, cutting them out using a template and by using a paint programme on the computer. 

Some of us even found a way of making poppies using our fruit!

Another catch up session!

The firemen came to tell us how to keep safe if we are near fire.  We talked about fireworks, bonfires and matches.  We also found out that if we see anyone on fire we need to tell them to stop, drop and roll.  We practised shouting (very loudly!) lots of times until we all knew it!  We also found out that to get the firemen to come if there is a fire we need to phone 999, but that we should only do this if there is a real fire.  We were all asked to go home and see if we have a smoke alarm in our house -I hope you all remembered to check.  If you don’t have one then the fire brigade are happy to come and fit one – just come and ask in the school office for a form.

We found out how to prepare vegetables for cooking.  We washed, cut and grated lots of vegetables and made them into vegetable soup – it is really easy to make!  Nearly all the class loved the soup and we had a queue of people outside the door wanting a bowlful.  Mr Hostad even brought his own bowl and spoon!  We shared some of the soup with Blue and Poppy group – we hope you liked it.  We all made a hat to wear to help us become better chefs!

The school nurse came to visit Year 1 to teach us how to keep healthy by keeping clean.  We found out when we need to wash our hands and how to wash them properly.  It now takes us ages to wash our hands every time we go to the toilet!  Don’t expect us to wash our necks at home though as we didn’t talk about that!!
